WTF Happened to Halloween?

This may be a short WTF Wednesday today. I have things going on, things that require positive energy. This will be a surface WTF, you know, something that has annoyed me but not that much.

Last night I was sitting on the couch doing my usual, half watching TV and half reading and writing on my laptop. I have a busy mind, I usually need to be doing two things at once to feel relaxed (no lie, I am seriously like that). My brother popped by, he was upset, he had just hit a raccoon while driving. Not a fun experience, traumatizing for sure.

It is always a man fest in my house; Hubby, brother, my two boys, I just normally tune out much of the man talk. But, last night my brother and hubby were bantering about something, keeping it light, I am sure in an effort to distract from the raccoon incident, for once I found myself laughing along with them. They were joking about Halloween. Specifically, that it now seems to be an excuse to (pardon my language) get your 'slut' on.

They were running through a list of costumes girls and women may try to Slut-ize. I heard slutty teacher and slutty Dorothy. Then, at the same time they both said: Slutty Pumpkin. I could not help but laugh at that one. The sad thing it is so damn true.

It seems like Halloween is really popular these days; can't say I am sad about it. I like Halloween, I think it may have been a bit neglected over the years. Too many people turning out their porch lights, pretending they are not home while binging on candy they told themselves they would hand out to kids. I think the Halloween spirit was certainly in need of resuscitation.

The first sign of that resuscitation was the appearance of costume shops in the local malls. Mall rent is not cheap, even if only for a month. The product has to sell to justify that. Two weeks ago we were walking through our local mall and my three year old spotted one of these costumes shops. Of course he wanted to go in, he loves all things spooky.

We were only in the very large store for a few minutes when I realized, this place was highly inappropriate for him. Almost every costume in there had a picture of a half naked woman on the package. Add in the accessories draped all around and I felt less like I was in a Halloween costume shop at my local Mall and more like I was in an S&M store.

WTF is up with Halloween being all about sex and kink all of a sudden? I thought this was a holidays for kids?

Hmmm, the three year old has been too quiet while I wrote this. Parents know, this is a bad sign. I better go see what he is doing. Maybe he is playing dress up. But, you can be sure he is not in his slutty pirate costume ;).

*lol* Love your closing line! And you're right - I think Halloween isn't for kids so much anymore - more about the party for the grown ups....which is kind of sad. So is the whole go to the mall for candy thing....but I get why people choose to do it. We've lost the 'it takes a village' philosophy in our world it seems...maybe we should say 'it takes a mall - complete with slutty costume store....'

Sorry to hear about the racoon incident. That is not a good feeling. If there was a little more estrogen in your house the boys could have pulled out the Barbies to distract themselves...oh - wait....doesn't that jibe with your topic this week? *lol*

Hahahohoheehee! I laughed out loud at your thoughts on Halloween, Mrs Mamma! Because I have been annoyed by the same observations for the last few years. I remember being asked what I was going to dress up as one year (2003 to be exact) and when I answered with "vampire", the response was "slutty vampire?"
Is there any other kind? Really i was just going to go as Count Dracula who IS a major slut, but he never wore fishnets, stilettos and a bustier...did he??? I'm amazed at how many women need an excuse to dress up as a prostitute. Remember the '80's when people just said they were dressing up as a hooker for Halloween? Ahh, the good ol' days :)

I know that it is crazy, when I was younger I remember it being about gore. The scary the better.
