Marking the Moments

I haven't been so glued to my TV in a long time; the Olympics have officially sucked me in and my nails have been paying for it. I'm not normally a nail biter but, once I start... I cannot stop. The Canada vs. Slovakia game left both my thumbs and my ring fingers completely ravaged and I now have to endure finger shame for the next few weeks. Damn, what I do in the name of hockey!

It hasn't been all about the Olympics in the last week though. Last Saturday was my Husband's big 30th Birthday Bash which was specifically planned for that particular evening after careful forethought and inspection of the Olypmic hockey schedule (we couldn't have anyone missing hockey that night now could we).

I was nervous about the party at first because we were mixing several different groups of people and I wasn't entirely sure the mingling was going to happen naturally. I planned a few games to break the ice and I would say my efforts were rewarded as it ended up being a very fun time. I hope it will linger in my Hubby's memory for many years to come and I know I won't soon forget it - please don't ask me why, just know I won't be touching wine, vodka or champagne for a good, long time.

One of the highlights of the night was the game I had my Hubby play. I gave him little missions or dares that he had to complete for liquid rewards. He loves acting and improv and just generally making a fool of himself so, he embraced this opportunity. As the night progressed, I opened this little game up to anyone that was interested and offered some tasty prizes that were very well received. It was a little like high-school all over again.

Some of my favourite dares to watch play out were:

Call each person that arrives Dave and Say: "So good to see you Dave!"

Speak about yourself in the third person for the next 20 minutes.

Interrupt 5 conversations in the next half hour and say: "I agree, it is all going according to the prophecy."

Walk up to someone and whisper: "Dude, I thought you should know your B.O. is really intense tonight".

Swap an article of clothing with another partygoer.

Yup... it was fun to see adults make complete fools of themselves. Especially since, as the host, I did not have to complete any of them.

Another fun game we played was the Guess Who You Are game (a la the Inglorious Basterds). Guess Who You Are is a game where you have a sticky note on your head with the name of a famous figure on it and you have to guess who you are by asking a person next to you yes and no questions.

We used a wide range of characters. Some of the funniest were: Yoda, Megan Fox (a man had that one and was truly at a loss),  Lady Gaga, Jane Austen, Jesus, Ernest Hemingway and George W. Bush. If you haven't played this at a party, may I suggest you try it soon.

Anyway, it was a good night. My 30th is at the end of the year and all I can say is... Hubby has some big shoes to fill because after the party I gave him, I have high expectations.

Cheers!
